Gunblue

The final step in this restoration project is gunblueing the top. Gunblue is a nasty chemical mixture that, to some extent, prevents steel from rusting. It is not for sale in Europe, but it is available through friends in the USA. They can send you small bottles of the stuff in the mail.

I removed the index plate and spring from the top plate and then sanded it to remove whatever rust was left. I applied the gunblue with a small brush. After several minutes I wiped it off and buffed the top with a felt wheel on the Dremel. After repeating this seven or eight times, the top looked perfect. Another project finished!
